A relation can be said to be a set of ordered pairs relating to sets. For example a relation between family members, we may have a set of children who are related to their parents or other members in a family. This relation between family members can be "a child of", "a father of " "a daughter of" etc. The relation is denoted by a capital letter R and it can be written as,
R ={(x,y): x is an element of the first set X and y is an element of the second set Y}. This relation is read as "R is a set of ordered pair (x,y) such that x is an element of the first set and y is an element of the second set"
